Rolling Roadstead Anchorage

Rolling Roadstead (Catala Island Provincial Park).  Rolling Roadstead offers acceptable anchorage in fair weather.  From the west, the approach can be tricky.  Douglass and Watmough describe the approach in their books.  Careful navigation is called for, including the finding and identifying of the various rocks and reefs in the entrance.  The hazards are easily identified, either by the breaking surf or kelp growing in the shallows.  With the hazards accounted for, the entry is reported to be safe.  All agree that it should be run in fair weather only, with good visibility.

If you’re coming down from Tatchu Point, especially in a fresh westerly, it’s easier to enter via Gillam Channel, leaving Black Rock and Entrance Reef to port and approach Rolling Roadstead from the southwest.  Anchor in the lee of the point of land that juts abruptly from Catala Island.

Catala Island, which protects Rolling Roadstead, is a provincial marine park.  The beach on Catala Island is beautiful.  Several sea caves are accessible.
