Walters Cove.  The tiny settlement of Walters Cove has almost everything you might need after a week or two of working your way along the coast: outpost hospital, ice charts a small general store, payphone, a restaurant and coffee shop, relaxed and friendly people, happy kids and lazy dogs.

One thing Walters Cove does not have is liquor.  By a vote of the Kyuquot Native Community, Walters Cove is dry, and there’s not a drop to be bought.  Nor is liquor in evidence, even on the dock.  Another thing you won’t find is fuel.  Be sure you have enough fuel in your tanks.  The nearest fuel is in Fair Harbour.

From seaward, the safest approach to Walters Cove in all weather is from Whistle Buoy MC, at the entrance to Brown Channel.  Use Chart 3683.  Go through Brown Channel and turn to starboard on a course to leave Gayward Rock to starboard.  At Gayward Rock go to large-scale Chart 3651 to work your way past the east side of Walters Island and into Walters Cove.

Boats coming down from the Bunsby Islands probably will follow Chart 3683’s rather obvious passage along the Vancouver Island shoreline, leaving Cole Rock t starboard, and McLean Island and Chief Rock Buoy M29 to port.  At Gayward Rock they would move large-scale Chart 3651.

Several locals insist, “Don’t anchor in Walters Cove!” The bottom, they say, is foul with debris.  Furthermore, the floor of the bay is crisscrossed by h8gh voltage submarine electoral cables, A Telus phone line, and the water lines serving the community.

Instead of anchoring, tie up at the public wharf to port as you enter.  Long mooring floats are on each side of the public wharf.  The general store and post office is at the head of the wharf.    Stock arrives once per week.  Walters Cove Resort also offers moorage, reservations are recommended.
