The city was named in honour of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. Settlers began arriving in 1843, making Victoria one of the oldest cities in the Pacific Northwest. The city’s British colonial past is evident in its Victorian architecture and heritage buildings, most notable are the Empress Hotel which opened in 1908 and the Legislative buildings completed in 1897.
The capital of British Columbia, Victoria lies on the rocky south end of Vancouver Island. With plenty of parkland, Victoria is renowned for its outdoor activities and beautiful gardens.
