Estevan Point West Coast Vancouver Island

Estevan Point.  Estevan Point is the southwest corner of the Hesquiat Peninsula, another of the headlands where winds and seas build and become confused.  Estevan Point can be ugly in a storm, but in more settled conditions does not present the challenge found at Cape Cook or Cape Scott.  In fog, the problem with Estevan Point is its low, flat terrain, which makes its shoreline a poor target for radar.  The rocks more than a mile offshore make Estevan Point unforgiving for the navigator who is off-course.

From Nootka Sound, a rounding of Estevan Point first must clear Escalante Rocks and Perez Rocks, both of them on the west side of Hesquiat Peninsula.  Unfortunately for the navigator, no single chart shows all the Estevan Point from Nootka Sound to Hesquiat Bay on a large scale.  Chart 3603, which doesn’t give much close-in detail.  Once at Estevan Point, you can use Chart 3674 to continue to Hot Springs Cove.

Especially with the lack of a single good large-scale chart for the west side of Hesquiat Peninsula, the general advice is to give Estevan Point “lots of room.”  Give Escalante Rocks and Perez Rocks lots of room, too.  This applies when heading north as well.
