Hotspring Island Haida Gwaii

Hotspring Island has been one of the most popular stops in Haida Gwaii.  The hot springs, located on the south side of the island, were some of the finest on the coast.  A magnitude 7.7 earthquake shook the area in October of 2012 and appeared to change mother nature’s plumbing.  For several years, the flow of hot water ceased entirely.  In 2015, pools of hot water appeared below the high tide line and in 2016 some of the pools began filling again.  The hottest one is near the Watchmen dwelling, and the other two nearby pools are linked by a new boardwalk.  In addition to the fabulous boardwalk, changing facilities and a bathhouse were added at the site.

Haida Watchmen are on-site and require boaters to call on VHF channel 06 before coming ashore.  The anchorage directly off hot springs is exposed, with marginal holding on a rocky bottom.  A better anchor is between Hotspring and House islands.
