Port Hardy Yacht Moorage

Port Hardy is the northernmost community on Vancouver Island.  Moorage is at the seasonal Seagate T-Floats, formerly called the City Dock (Summer Only), Quarterdeck Marina and Port Hardy Harbour Authority.

The seasonal Seagate T-Floats is adjacent to the Coast Guard wharf and has the closest access to town and shopping.   If the floats are full, you can anchor out and take the dinghy in.

The Quarterdeck Marina and the Harbour Authority floats are a mile or so farther into Hardy Bay, past a narrow entry channel.  It’s a one-mile walk from the inner bay to downtown.

A large Save-on-Foods supermarket is at Thunderbird Mall.  For items with “Regular price/Member price” shelf tags, we found that non-members can get the member price by asking the checker for a tourist card.  The store will pay the cab fare to deliver large orders to the Seagate Summer Floats, Harbour Authority floats and Quarterdeck Marina.

Port Hardy is clean and friendly.  A park is along the shore with a seaside promenade past tidy waterfront homes.  The Visitor Centre is next to the park.  Be sure to read the sign commemorating the completion of the Carrot Highway.  A nearby library houses a small but excellent museum.  The museum on the main street in town is small but superb.  It also houses the finest collection of local history and local interest books.

Port Hardy has city amenities, including a hospital and airport with scheduled flights to and from Vancouver.  Nearby Bear Cove is the terminus for the BC Ferry that runs to Prince Rupert during the summer.  Coastal Mountain Fuels is in Bear Cove.  There is a recreational boat marina in Bear Cove with portapotties and a two-lane boat ramp.

Fuel is available on the east side of Hardy Bay at Coastal Mountain Fuels in Bear Cove, and at Quarterdeck Marina farther in the bay.

Dangerous Reef:  South of the Port Hardy Seagate T-Floats in the outer bay, yellow buoys mark a large drying reef.  If proceeding to the inner bay, pass well east of the reef.
