Squirrel Cove Cortes Island

Squirrel Cove is made up of an outer bay and an inner bay.   The outer bay provides access to the public wharf and the Squirrel Cove Trading Co. general store dock.  The Flying Squirrel take-out stand and The Cove restaurant are located upland.  A farmers market is held Sundays from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.  The inner bay, consisting of two anchorage areas, has better protection and during the summer is often fill with anchored boats.  A saltwater lagoon is at the head of the inner bay  A connecting rapids runs into the lagoon at high tide and out of the lagoon at low tide.  Be sure to plan an exit strategy if you enter the lagoon by dinghy.

At one time the inner bay was used for log booming.  June Cameron wrote an article in Pacific Yachting telling of a tangle of sunken logs on the bottom   Our side-scan sounder showed the bay filled with logs scattered like matchsticks.  A trail leads from the northwest corner of Squirrel Cove to Von Donop Inlet.

Squirrel Cove Public Wharf

Guest moorage with 15, 20 & 30 amp power along 200 feet of dock.  The dock is close to the Squirrel Cove Trading Co store.  The Cove Restaurant and the Flying Squirrel Take-Out window.  Garbage drop and pay telephone are available.

Washrooms, showers and laundry are in a separate building just west of the store.  Gasoline, diesel, propane and kerosene are available upland.  Gas and diesel are available at the store’s dock which is small and only accessible at higher tides.  Picnic tables are available.   This is a good provisioning stop, with fresh produce, meat and fish, groceries, ice, books, marine hardware, post office, payphone, Wi-Fi, liquor, and ATM.   The expanded hardware section downstairs has just about anything a person might need.

A crafts shop and gallery are next to the store, stocked with island-made goods and clothing.  Artists take turns staffing the shop.  A Sunday market, with crafts, local produce, baked goods and musicians, runs from 11am to 3pm summer only.
