De Courcy Group Anchorage
De Courcy Group. The De Courcy Group has several interesting small anchorages. Whale Boat Island, just off the southeast shore of Ruxton Island, is a relatively undeveloped provincial park. The preferred anchorage is south of the island, taking care to avoid a drying rock. The north end of Ruxton Island has Herring Bay, one of the most attractive small anchorages in the northern Gulf Islands, and frequently used when the anchorage at Pirates Cove on De Courcy Island is full (which it often is in the summer). Herring Bay has a white sand beach to enjoy. The De Courcy Group is named after Michael de Courcy, captain of the H.M.S. Pylades, who charted these waters from 1859 to 1861.
