Permits for Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve

The Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, a Protected Area, was created in 1987 and encompasses the southern third of the archipelago.  The Reserve is jointly managed by the Haida and the government of Canada.  It is unique in Canada, covering both inland and sea.  A visit to Gwaii Haanas requires a permit for the entire time you will be in protected areas and payment of a daily fee for a maximum stay of six days within the Park boundary.  The daily fees are $20 for adults, $16.60 for seniors (65 and over), and free for youths (6 to 16 years).

Only 100 people are permitted in Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve at once.  Advance reservations are recommended to ensure you’ll get a permit.  Orientation is required for all visitors, either in advance by DVD or at the Haida Heritage f in Skidegate.  The Heritage Centre has a gift shop and museum displays.  Orientation sessions are typically at 9:00 a.m.   Monday – Friday in June and after mid-August, and Monday-Saturday July to mid-August.  Orientation sessions can be scheduled by appointment if staff is available.  Reserving space for scheduled orientations is not required.  A permit tag is issued at the time of orientation and must be carried ashore within the Park Reserve.   The excellent orientation covers the history of Gwaii Haanas as well as the procedures to visit the different sites within the park.  All protected sites are managed by Haida Watchmen.  They can be reached on VHF 06 prior to going ashore at each site.  They manage the number of people on shore at a time.  They also provide interpretive talks about the site and are very welcoming.
