Cape Beale West Coast Vancouver Island
Cape Beale. Cape Beale, surrounded by off-lying rocks, marks the eastern entrance to Barkley Sound. Trevor Channel exits at Cape Beale and is the safest entry to, or exit from, Barkley Sound in thick weather or poor visibility. Seas can be difficult off Cape Beale when an outflowing current from Barkley Sound meets the longshore current outside. The collision of currents, combined with wind and shallow depths around the cape, can make for heavy going. The usual advice is to round Cape Beale in the early morning before the summertime westerly wind gets up.
The local lightkeepers have provided this bit of local knowledge: A nasty reef is one-quarter of a mile in front of the light station. Beware of coming in close to take photos.
