Surge Narrows & Beazley Passage
Surge Narrows and Beazley Passage should be run at or near slack water. Spring floods set eastward to 12 knots and ebbs set westward to 10 knots. Current predictions are show under Beazley Passage in the Canadian Tide and Current Tables Vol. 6, and Ports and Passes.
Although Beazley Passage, between Peck Island and Sturt Island, has the strongest currents in the Surge Narrows area, it is the preferred route between Hoskyn Channel and Okisollo Channel. Especially on an ebb current in Beazley Passage, watch for Tusko Rock, which dries at 5 feet, on the east side of the pass at the north end. Stay well clear of Tusko Rock.
According to Sailing Directions, the duration of slack at Surge Narrows varies between 5 – 11 minutes. The passage north of Settler’s Group is usable following the deeper channel, avoiding he charted rocks and shoals.
