Craigdarroch Castle Victoria

Craigdarroch Castle is referred to as a “castle,” although it’s more accurately described as a lavish and grand Victorian-era mansion. The castle was built between 1887 and 1890 for the wealthy coal baron Robert Dunsmuir and his family.   It boasts four stories 25,000 sq ft, with 39 rooms, and an impressive tower that offers panoramic views of the surrounding area.

The interior of Craigdarroch Castle is remarkable, showcasing detailed woodwork, stained glass windows, and ornate furnishings that show off this amazing property from the late 19th century. The mansion was equipped with modern amenities of its time, including electricity, plumbing, and central heating.

After the Dunsmuir family’s ownership, the castle had several different uses, including being used as a military hospital during World War I and serving as the Victoria College (now the University of Victoria). In the mid-20th century, efforts were made to preserve and restore the castle to its former glory, and it was eventually opened to the public as a historic site and museum.
