Share the Seafood Bounty or Freeze It?

It is easy to catch a trap full of crab and giving away a few can bring new found friends.  Otherwise crab can be frozen and keeps well, up to a year.  Some folks will cook their crab, clean the meat out of the shell, and then pack it in freezer bags or vacuum bags with clean seawater or milk.  This method save room in the freezer.  When you are ready, defrost and squeeze the excess liquid out of the meat.  Freezing in milk or seawater also works sell for uncooked prawns.  It keeps the meat from breaking down and getting freezer burn.

Fishing, catching and fresh seafood are all part of experiencing cruising the Pacific Northwest Passage.  While much of your catch may end up frozen for later, fresh fish, prawns and crab, consumed just an hour or two after coming out of the water is about as good as it gets.
