Hidden Secret Coves by Captain Duncan McCallum
One of the nicest ‘secret coves’ very rarely used is Bruce Bight on the SE side of Saturna Island. It’s halfway between Vancouver and VIM and it affords great anchorage during Summer North Westerlies. There is a great beach that is now a Marine Park. Ashore you will find the remains of an old stone homestead and an enormous old Maple Tree. You have the view of Boundary Pass and the ships bound for Vancouver or outbound to parts unknown. I have seen many Orcas that come right into the anchorage off Java Inlet. It’s a great spot for sunsets watching the sun drop behind the Malahat Ridge and the hills on Vancouver Island.
My second choice on Saturna Island is Saturna Beach, it’s public access but again rarely used. There is a dock with a rope swing and a water pump for washing off after a swim in the old salt chuck. There is also a new dock just north of the public beach for tenders if someone wants to visit the vineyard and winery next to the beach. They offer wine tasting and lunch, and it’s an easy enjoyable walk through the vineyard up to the restaurant.
