Zeballos Inlet – Zeballos Small Craft Harbour
The trip up Zeballos Inlet is a scenic one, with bulbous-topped odd-shaped mountains, and sheer rock faces rising above the shores. Zeballos is a mining town that looks like Cicily, Alaska, the fictional town made famous by the television show Northern Exposure, with wandering streets, false-fronted buildings, and a museum. The town is built at the mouth of the Zeballos River, next to mountains that go straight up.
The museum, located on the main road heading out of town, is one of the town’s main attractions. It’s small but fascinating, with mining paraphernalia, photographs, and a full-scale model of a mine entrance. In 2016 it was staffed by a full-time curator, but in previous years has not always been open regularly. If you arrive at the museum during the workweek and no one is there, inquire at the municipal hall and someone will give you a tour.
The town recently constructed a boardwalk trail through the Zeballos River estuary. It’s a beautiful walk along the river.
Zeballos Fuel Dock monitors VHF 68. open all year. Gasoline, diesel, propane, kerosene, petroleum products, some marine supplies.
Zeballos Municipal Wharf is open all year. For large vessels, loading and unloading only. The small float next to the wharf is for a short-term (a few hours) tie-up. Some overnight moorage with permission. Access to power and water if absolutely necessary.
Zeballos Small Craft Harbour is open all year and monitors VHF 06. It has 400 feet of moorage, 30 amp power, year-round washrooms and showers, water, waste oil collection, an all-tide launch ramp, long term parking. A sign on the east side of the easternmost dock warns of shallow water, ur the Hulsizers report finding 2.7 meters when sounding the depth with a lead line at low tide.
