Growler Cove Anchorage Broughtons

Growler Cove, on the west end of West Cracoft Island, is an excellent anchorage, with ample room and good protection from westerlies and easterlies.   It is popular with commercial fishermen who work Johnstone Strait and Queen Charlotte Strait.   During prime commercial fishing months of July and August, Growler Cove is apt to be full of commercial boats, with little room for pleasure craft.

If you’re approaching from the east, enter along West Cracroft Island, favouring the island as you work your way in.  We saw an extensive kelp bed, not shown on the chart, off the point that leads to the entrance.  We would keep clear of that kelp.  If you’re approaching from the west, enter between Sophia Islands and Baron Reef, both shown on the cart.   Inside, keep a mid-channel course, favouring the north side to avoid a charted rock about halfway in.  Good anchoring near the had in 18 – 24 feet.
