VIM Press Release – Pacific Yachting, May 2017

Friday, March 17th 2017

The Victoria International Marina (VIM) has set a goal to be the Pacific Coast’s first luxury green marina.

As ambassadors of the Pacific marine lifestyle, the marina is pursuing the highest certification level (5 anchors) of the Georgia Strait Alliance’s Clean Marine certification program, a comprehensive audit and operations program that ensures marinas are operating to the highest standards of safety and environmental responsibility.

VIM also hopes to demonstrate innovative new clean technologies at the marina, including a Tesla electric vehicle and charging station, and electric golf carts for the docks. Marina boats will use hybrid electric engines, minimizing the dependence on fossil fuels and making use of the low-emission hydro-electric power in British Columbia. The marina is also exploring solar window films and wall panel systems for power generation in their main operations building.

The marina has set a goal of 90% waste diversion, meaning that only a small percentage of waste produced and collected onsite will end up in the landfill. The marina will provide collection facilities for a variety of hard-to-recycle items, including all used oil and oil products (such as containers and filters), which can be harmful if leached into the surrounding environment.

Recognizing the impact the marina will have on local industry, VIM is making a concerted effort to promote eco-tourism in the region by recommending green tour operators through their concierge service and curating a tenant mix that includes some of the finest local and eco-conscious businesses. It is their hope that the marina will contribute to the region as a premier destination for conscious travelers and boaters.
